An engineering student, Ankush Suryakant Ingalwad, 20, on Wednesday morning stabbed his 16-year-old paternal cousin and then committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of a commercial building in Hadapsar area.

Ankush sustained serious head injuries and was admitted to Sassoon Hospital in a critical condition. He was declared dead at 1pm. His cousin has been admitted to Shraddha Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment and is said to be in a stable condition.

Hadapsar police said Ankush was a resident of Shinde Vasti in Sasanenagar and had some personal dispute with the girl, who is the daughter of his aunt.

The incident took place after the girl came out of her computer class on the fifth floor of Yashraj Complex. As the injured girl fell to the floor, some people rushed to the spot and caught hold of Ankush. However, he managed to free himself and then jumped from the floor.

Ankush’s elder brother, Balaji, said the former left the house at 9 am for college. “We were aware that he was attracted to our aunt’s daughter, but we are clueless as to what went wrong between them,” he said.

Senior police inspector of Hadapsar police station, Pandharinath Mandhare, said, “We need to investigate this case further. Currently, the family members are in deep shock. We will start investigating the case only after we record the statements of the family members.”
