The rising gold rate seems to have inspired smugglers to indulge in extremely innovative ideas to avoid being caught. A team of officers from Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) led by Superintendent DK Vohra had gold pouring out of electric kettles instead of their morning tea on Wednesday having intercepted a passenger from Dammam on suspicion.

"Having alighted from a jet airways flight number 9W 951 from Dammam early on September 28, 2011, Martoz Khan was intercepted by our team while attempting to conceal 4.8 kilograms of gold worth over 1.2 crore rupees," confirmed the additional commissioner(AIU), Mahendra Pal.

According to sources Khan, who works as a labourer, was carrying the gold in both his hand baggage as well as the checked in luggage. The crude gold was concealed in various forms in packets of different shapes. While some of the gold was concealed in the kettles and blankets, Khan had even wrapped some of the gold in toffee wrappers.

However, it is still unclear who the gold was to be delivered to.  "Khan has been giving conflicting statements about the recipient of this consignment. His interrogation is on and we are trying to find the truth," added Pal.
