A 76-year-old NRI from South Africa, who arrived in Mumbai with his 67-year-old wife on October 31 to attend the marriage of his grand-daughter to be held on November 2 in coastal Ratnagiri district, went missing from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).

Narrating the incident, nephew Liyakat Parkar, 37, said, “My uncle Abdul Rehman Parkar and aunt Rashida reached Mumbai airport from Cape Town on October 31 at 1am. The couple then hired a taxi to reach CST to catch the Mandgaon-bound Mandavi Express leaving at 6.55am to go to their native place of Chiplun. “

Liyakat further added that on reaching CST at around 2.30am, the couple sat with their luggage in the general waiting hall. Abul Rehman went to buy two tickets for Chiplun at the booking office. But, he returned on noticing the serpentine queue.

Fifteen minutes later, Rashida went to the booking office but came back finding the same long queue. However, on her return, she found her husband missing even though their luggage was still there. She searched for him around the booking office and general waiting hall for half an hour.

Unable to trace him, Rashida bought a ticket to Chiplun and boarded the Mandavi Express with her luggage. On reaching Chiplun, she informed her relatives about what happened. Surprisingly, Rashida then attended her granddaughter, Tausiya’s nikah in her native village of Kaluste in Chiplun taluka on November 2.

On November 3, upon her return to Mumbai with a relative, she filed a missing person’s complaint at CST railway police station. Liyakat added that the couple has return air tickets to South Africa on November 23 from Mumbai.

“On receiving the missing complaint, besides all the railway police stations in Mumbai, we alerted Mumbai police, Thane and Navi Mumbai police, as well as the state police headquarters, and sent them Parkar’s photo and description,” said senior police inspector Ashok Kumar Jadhav.

“The CCTV footage shows that Abdul Parkar was loitering in the general waiting hall for an hour before walking out of the station. If anybody finds Parkar, please inform the CST railway police station on 022-2262 0173,” said sub-inspector Subhash Ikke of CST railway police station.
