Even as the police are making all efforts to clamp down on drink driving before New Year’s Day, a 24-year-old woman was killed when her drunk friend lost control of the car at Kherwadi on Friday morning.

At 3.30am, Ankita Chheda, a fashion designer who lived in Juhu, was returning after partying at Malabar Hill with her friend Vimal Goradia, 28.

The police said Goradia, who was driving the Honda City, was drunk. He was speeding and lost control of the car and hit the road divider.

Sources said the duo’s friends, who were in another car behind them, rushed them to a private hospital. But, later they had to be shifted to Bandra’s Bhabha civic hospital as it was a police case. Ankita was declared dead on arrival.

Goradia is being treated at Bhabha hospital and is said to be out of danger.

The police have found that the duo reportedly met over a networking site. Goradia, who studies and works in the US, had come down to the city a few days ago to meet Ankita.

After partying at Malabar Hill, Ankita and her friends were on their way to Juhu when the accident occurred.

Ankita has an elder sister. Her family is into packaging and export business.

“She was doing well in her career and was a cheerful person,” said Prashant Patel, a family friend of the Chhedas.

Goradia’s family is based in the US. They are expected to reach the city in a couple of days. Goradia was supposed to fly back after celebrating the New Year.

The Chhedas have asked their friends, including Patel, to take care of him.

Goradia’s statement could not be recorded as he keeps losing his consciousness. “Only after his statement is recorded, we will be able to get a clear picture about the accident,” said Avdhut Chavan, senior police inspector of Kherwadi police station.

In the on-going drive against motorists, the traffic police booked 150 motorists for drink driving on Thursday.

A total of 84 motorists got simple imprisonment for drink driving and 73 motorists’ driving licences were cancelled by the court.
