A 2-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy were seriously injured when they were bitten by a female stray dog at Rupeenagar in Nigdi on Monday afternoon. Nearly 12 residents, including an 8-year-old boy, were also bitten by the same dog.

The dog has bitten the left side of 2-year-old girl Umera Chowdhary's face and mauled the chin and lips of 5-year-old Arfaz Ansari. Both children were first admitted to the Yamunagar Hospital, before being shifted to the  Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri.

Yamunanagar Hospital medical officer, Dr RR Bhosale told DNA, “There were nearly 12 patients who suffered dog bites. All the patients have been given the anti-rabies injections immediately.”

“However, the two children have been referred to the YCMH for further treatment,” he said.

YCMH director Dr Anand Jagdale said, “The condition of both children is stable. The treatment is going on.”

Meanwhile, the veterinary department of the PCMC has captured the female dog.
PCMC veterinary department chief Dr Satish Gore told DNA, “The dog had given birth to pups and the incident may have happened because she was trying to protect them. The female dog does not have rabies.”
