College students in Mumbai couldn’t stop gushing about DNA’s initiative, Hygiene for Kitchens, which will train canteen staff for free on food safety practices. But, they don’t want the campaign to be limited to their canteens alone — they want to take it to the streets.

“The campaign will add to the credibility of college canteens. However, there are several fast food joints running around college campuses. They also need to be made aware of hygiene measures, as these are more favoured than the canteens,” said several students.

An active member of the Rotary Club at HR College, Rahul Batra, echoed several other students saying canteens lose out to fast food stalls thriving outside college campuses. “Food handlers at such places should also be trained to make the eating-out experience hygienic for students.”

Misha Ashar of the Xavier’s College had just one advice for students: play it safe. “They should be told of certain simple, hygiene measures that they can take like when eating out, make sure to opt for healthy food — mostly dishes that are served hot. It will make a bigger difference if students are briefed on how to eat out and how to choose food items.”

Pankeet Sheth, a first-year MBA student of the Sydenham Institute of Management and Research, put the onus of success of the campaign on canteen contractors. “It will be up to the canteen contractors to implement the measures.” He stressed on starting with the basics, like keeping fresh food and filtering drinking water.

Minnat Doshee, a final-year mass media student from the Jai Hind College, said, “If I see a person who is preparing my dish taking measures like wearing hand gloves and hair caps, I will definitely opt for the canteen. It will profit both students and canteen contractors.”
