The officers of Mumbai Crime Branch recently arrested a diamond trader and his associate on charges of extortion and procuring a fake passport.

The diamond trader was planning to flee to Malaysia, police sources claimed. The arrested duo has been identified as Bhadresh Nanalal Shah, a Surat-based diamond trader and Rajesh Purshottam Chaturani.

According to the police, they received information that Shah had tried to extort money from a businessman and was planning to flee to Malaysia on a fake passport. Acting on the tip-off, sleuths from the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) nabbed Shah. Shah is in the police custody till February 15.

“During interrogation, Shah said that there were criminal cases registered against him, due to which he could not travel abroad on his original passport. He claims that he asked his friend Chaturani to get a fake passport and a Malaysian visa,” the official said.

He added that, after the passport was ready, Shah asked Chaturani to meet him near Crawford Market on Sunday. Accordingly, the police laid a trap at the said place and nabbed Chaturani. Chaturani has been remanded in police custody till February 21.

“We have seized a passport from Chaturani with name Gandhi Rajesh Nanalal having Shah’s photograph on it. The passport was issued on January 31 from Kolkatta. A Malaysian visa dated February 2 was also on the passport,” said a police official.

The police sources also said that a detailed investigation is being carried out in this case, as it seems a major fake passport racket is being involved.
