The DB Marg police on Saturday arrested a 47-year-old diamond broker, for allegedly concocting a story that four “cops” threatened him and robbed diamonds and cash over Rs19 lakh from him.

According to police, diamond broker and Dahisar resident Mansukh Seledia lodged an FIR last Monday. In his complaint, he said that while he was walking near Opera House, four persons who introduced themselves as CID officers, allegedly said they had specific information on Seledia being involved in “illegal activities” and took him to an isolated place nearby. They allegedly attacked him with knives on both hands and robbed from him diamonds worth Rs18 lakh and Rs1.8 lakh in cash. A passerby then admitted him to a nearby private hospital, Seledia told the police.

“We were suspecting foul play from day one. It was strange that in a busy area like Opera House nobody saw the scuffle (between Seledia and the robbers),” said an investigating officer, requesting anonymity.

He added that after the FIR was lodged, Seledia got himself discharged from the hospital at Opera House and got admitted to another hospital at Dahisar. “He had also consumed poison to avoid the police questioning. Even after the Dahisar hospital authorities had completed his treatment, he was not ready to get discharged. Doctors also said the injuries on his hands were not genuine,” said the officer.

“He broke down on Saturday and admitted of having concocted a story. He was then arrested and was produced before the court on Sunday,” said police inspector Vinod Sawant, adding that the stolen valuables were not yet recovered and the motive behind the crime had not been ascertained.
