Having failed to make a breakthrough in a series of house breaking incidents at the defence quarters in Cuffe Parade, the police cracked the case through the most unexpected suspect — an army personnel’s son.

On September 10, the naval police apprehended Omprakash Soni, 19, who was loitering suspiciously in naval residential premises. Soni’s father is posted in the aircraft maintenance engineering department of the Indian Army.

“The naval police detained Soni on suspicion for interrogation after he fumbled in answering their questions. During preliminary interrogation, Soni broke down and confessed his involvement in two house breaking cases in the area,” said an officer on condition of anonymity.

They then handed him over to the Cuffe Parade police.
During interrogation, Soni reportedly confessed to having broken into two homes in the area and revealed the names of his eight accomplices — mostly sons of army and naval officers living in the quarters and aged between 19 and 22 years.

The Cuffe Parade police arrested six of Soni’s accomplices, but two are still at large. Defence spokesperson Captain M Nambiar said: “We don’t know the details of the case, but we are aware that a few boys were arrested who were later released on bail.”
Refusing to divulge details, senior inspector JK Kharat said: “It is too early to share any details because we are still looking for two more accused.”

“Though the accused has confessed to at least two house breakings, we have not been able to corroborate any of his claims due to discrepancies in his confessions and some of the facts in the case,” said an officer, adding that they will probe the boys’ involvement in the cases.
