The opposition rocked both the houses of state legislature on the second day of the budget session on Tuesday by demanding the resignation of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan over the central vigilance commissioner (CVC) controversy.

When assembly speaker Dilip Walse Patil refused permission to discuss the issue, the opposition members entered the well of the house shouting slogans. The house was adjourned for the day.

Leader of the opposition Eknath Khadse moved the adjournment motion twice demanding a discussion. When the speaker said that the motion does not fit the rule, Sena and BJP members entered the well of the house and shouted slogans demanding Chavan’s resignation.

Khadse later said that unless the chief minister explains his stand or apologise for his goof up in the appointment of PJ Thomas (CVC) case, their demand of resignation will stay.

“We expect Chavan to apologise for his act of hiding information. He should have submitted his resignation on the day his name surfaced in the issue,” Khadse said.

The state legislative council was also adjourned after its chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh turned down the adjournment motion moved by opposition leader Pandurang Phundkar who demanded a discussion on the CVC issue.

Phundkar sought a clarification on Chavan’s statement that the Kerala government was responsible for the vigilance report.

Deshmukh turned down the motion saying it is “not a state issue”.
With the opposition refusing to relent, the government, particularly the Congress, is chalking out its strategy to defend Chavan.

“Chavan is meeting senior leaders to garner support to defend the opposition’s attack,” said a minister.
