To win the approval of his parents for his marriage, Barkat Ali Pathan, 24, and his wife Salma alias Krishna Devi, 29, abducted their neighbours’ baby and fled from the city last month.

Pathan’s parents had disowned him after he married a woman from a different community. To add to this, Pathan and Salma were childless even after three years of their marriage. Although they consulted physicians, Salma was unable to conceive. It was only then that Salma, who was once married before and mothered two children, told Pathan that she had undergone sterilisation.

In order to win back his parents’ love and also to acquire a share of their ancestral property in Rajasthan, the duo planned to kidnap their neighbours’ nine-month-old baby boy. They thought that after they show the baby, they would be accepted in the family.

“Pathan and Salma resided near the house of Dashrath Wankhede, 23, and his wife Paro, 20, in Maharashtra Nagar.

Salma would occasionally take their son Suraj to her house. On August 10, Salma took the child with her when Paro and her mother-in-law were at lunch. When Salma did not return even after three hours, Paro went to her neighbour’s only to find their house locked. Paro and Dashrath registered a case against the couple at Trombay police station,” said Jalinder Khandagle, assistant commissioner of police, Trombay division.

Pathan worked as a supervisor at a construction site. Police got his mobile number from his colleagues and it was traced to a village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. When Pathan’s parents were questioned by the police team that reached there, they were told that the couple had left for Delhi.

Further investigation led the police to Sector 5 railway station in Gurgaon. Again, with the help of a mobile number given to them by Pathan’s parents, the kidnappers were traced to a rented flat. Pathan had set up a fruit shop in Gurgaon.

The couple was brought to the city on Wednesday. They have been booked for kidnapping and will be produced in the court on Thursday.

“The baby is fine and healthy and has been handed over to the Wankhedes,” said Khandagle.
