Two Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel were suspended on Thursday for extorting Rs10,000 from two college students at Dadar Terminus in November last year.

Mumbai Railway Police commissioner TA Chavan said, “I have suspended Sandeep Taware and Vikas Bodare, who were attached to the Ghatkopar railway police headquarters.”

The incident took place on November 25, 2009.  Suresh Parekh and Mahesh Loke (names changed to protect identity) were at Dadar Terminus to board a Chennai-bound train to visit Tirupati. While checking the duo’s mobile phones, Taware and Bodare, who were on bag-checking duty, found pornographic clippings in them.

The policemen then took the youths to a corner near the booking office and threatened to arrest them for possessing pornographic clippings.

They allegedly demanded Rs10,000 from the duo. Scared of being arrested, they took the policemen to a nearby ATM kiosk, withdrew the cash and gave them the money.

Later, when the policemen demanded their gold rings, the youths mustered courage and contacted a local BJP leader.

The leader rushed to the spot and the erring policemen were taken to Dadar railway police station. Senior police inspector Shivaji Shinde promised the passengers that action would be taken against the policemen.
