Only 25% out of the 116 senior police officers have taken charge as of now after their transfers and promotions were announced last month. While some of the officers have gone for official training, some have requested the police department to allow them to continue work at their present posting.

The transfers of 116 officers, including Indian Police Service officers, were announced on May 26. Concerned that the transfer orders would not be taken seriously by the police officers, Maharashtra home minister RR Patil had also given a statement saying that action would be initiated against those officers who are not taking charge of their new posting.

According to the sources, at the office of the director general of police there is no clarity as to why all the officers have not taken their fresh postings. “Some of the officers have gone for official training, hence they might take up their new post after the training is over, but rest have not cited any reasons as to why there is delay in taking their charge. We believe that many officers have not completed their tenure at the earlier postings and are, therefore, reluctant to take charge,” said a senior police officer.

Sources also said that already four officers, including a senior IPS officer, have sent letters to the department, requesting them to allow them to continue work at their current postings.

“Superintendent of police at Beed, Ravindra Shengaonkar, superintendent of police at Aurangabad, Vasant Pardesi and additional commissioner of police at Nagpur, Anoop Kumar Singh have written letters to the department asking to continue at the present postings. Also DCP Harish Baijal has moved to the MAT challenging the transfer order,” said the officer.

“As of now only 25% officers have taken charge and we believe the rest would gradually taken charge of their fresh postings in coming days,” said inspector general of police, establishment, BK Upadhyay.
