A bike chase by a cop on Ganeshotsav duty at Girgaon on Monday night culminated in the arrest of a hardened criminal who has more than 10 cases of chain snatching registered against him and his associate.
Umesh Karande, 40, a constable attached to the VP Road police station, was doing his Ganeshotsav duty at Bacchubhai police chowky at Girgaon when, around at 8.40pm, he noticed a woman and a few passers-by chasing two men fleeing on an Activa scooter in the narrow street of seventh Khetwadi. They were shouting “chor, chor”.
“On noticing it, I stopped a biker in front of police chowky and sat on his bike. Then, I requested him to follow the two snatchers speeding towards Delhi Darbar Hotel. Once we closed in on the duo, the criminals wanted to shake me off. But, I persisted as I knew what they were wearing and their descriptions.
Later, they turned their scooter towards Masjid Street. However, I managed to corner the duo with the help of passers-by at the dead end of Masjid Street and alerted the VP Road police,” said Karande. The police have recovered from them a 40g gold chain worth Rs1 lakh, belonging to one Dakshata Kadam, 38, a resident of Panvel. The duo had snatched her chain when she was waiting for a taxi to go to Dadar.
At least five cases of robbery and chain snatching were reported from across the city in the last 24 hours.
