Congress has been caught in a bind in Thane due to the coming together of NCP and MNS for the election of the standing committee chairperson's post in the civic body.

In the 16-member standing committee, Shiv Sena has eight, NCP five, Congress two and MNS one.

MNS has sprung a surprise by providing support to the NCP for the chairperson's post. Congress and NCP are technically a single group in the civic body and it has no option but to abide by the whip.

Congress and NCP had contested the civic body polls last month in an alliance, but still could not defeat the Shiv Sena, which emerged as the single largest party. MNS chief Raj Thackeray had extended supoprt to his erstwhile party (Shiv Sena) saying that it had the people's mandate. He had expected the Sena to return the favour in Nashik for the mayor's election, since his party was the single largest in the civic body.

However, Sena chose to join hands with NCP to prevent MNS from winning the mayor's post. However, BJP backed the party to enable it to win the post in Nashik.

In Thane, Shiv Sena is reportedly wooing the Congress to support it for the standing committee chairpersonship.

However, Congress, which is still reeling the Zilla Parishad president's election embarrassment, in which, the NCP backed out of its commitment to support it, is tight-lipped on its strategy on the recent developments in Thane.

State Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, however, told reporters that his party has not received any proposal from the Shiv Sena. "All the options are open before us," he added.

NCP sources say that Congress and NCP have been registered as one group in the civic body. "We were one group for mayor's election, as well as that of the standing committee. Congress has no option but to support us to avoid attracting provisions of anti-defection law," sources said.
