Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is all set to launch a programme called ‘GreenCo Rating System’ to check if the companies are environment-friendly.
“It is a voluntary programme that seeks commitments from companies in the manufacture and service sector, to optimally use the natural resources. The system includes all the sections of the company, right from the production stage to waste disposal. Even the supply chain will be included,” said S Raghupathy, senior director and head, green business centre.
“Companies the world-over have become extremely cautious about the impact that their business has on the environment. If we do not take ‘green actions’, then it is highly possible that our export to these countries will be affected. We have to understand that these days, ‘green means the business’, and we have to do it,” said Raghupathy.
He added that, though no serious objections have been raised against the Indian companies till now, it is possible for it to happen in near future. “Industry should be ready for measures like these that may be implemented soon, and this is our effort to keep our industry ready,” he added.
The ‘GreenCo Rating System’ will be officially launched on February 10, and till now around 25 companies have voluntarily agreed to be a part of this rating system .The assessment to rate the performance of a company, will be based on criterion such as energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management etc.
The companies will be marked depending on various green activities they undertake. The top-scoring companies would become the green face of the Indian industry, said the CII official.
