A special team from Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the Nitesh Rane firing case on Thursday visited the office of his NGO Swabhiman Sanghathana in Khar to reconstruct the incident which purportedly occurred about eight months ago. This was followed by Rane’s questioning and his statement was recorded, along with those of several others witnesses.

According to sources, the CBI team comprised at least 11 officers, most of whom had come from New Delhi. The sequence of events was dramatised after a basic round of questioning of all the concerned parties. A forensic team of CBI was also called to the crime spot to collect and look for evidences, if any were remaining.

The incident had taken place on September 10 last year when Chintu Sheikh, a member of Swabhiman himself, had alleged that he had been assaulted and then fired upon by Rane, and the bullet had reportedly brushed past his face, injuring him on the cheek.

The case was transferred to the crime branch after Sheikh alleged that the local police was siding with Rane, who is the son of revenue minister Narayan Rane. When the crime branch, too, said that there is no evidence of firing in the incident, Sheikh took up the matter in the Bombay high court, which found many loopholes in the crime branch’s investigation and handed the case to CBI.

The country’s premier investigating agency reportedly also questioned sleuths from the local police station and crime branch in order to know the manner in which the investigation was done or if there was any kind of partiality during the probe.

The CBI is also in the process of collecting the CCTV footage of Hiranandani hospital in Powai where Sheikh got himself admitted after the incident. The footage will help the agency establish whether there was any tampering of the medical evidences at the hospital. The authorities at the government-run JJ hospital are also expected to be questioned in the case, where the case was referred for second opinion.

“The CBI inquiry is going on and we have given our full support. Considering Swabhiman’s good work and its rising fame, and the upcoming civic elections, this is a
conspiracy set up by the BMC ruling party, Shiv Sena,” said Rane in his statement to the media.
