A CA degree is considered highly professional and offers students a package worth Rs5-6 lakh even at the beginning of their careers, something many MBA graduates do not get.
Aadit Devanand, 22, who completed Chartered Accountancy (CA) a year ago, is now pursuing MBA at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore.
On choosing management over CA, Devanand said, “I wanted to complete my formal education as a CA as it was mainly a correspondence course. With a management degree in finance, which complements CA, I can apply and present things better.”
A graduate from NM College, Mumbai, Devanand is one of 10 CAs in IIM-B’s class of 2012-14. The institute had seven CAs in its previous batch.
This year, the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Mumbai, has five students with CA degrees.
Piyush Kadoo, 24, joined JBIMS this year after completing BDS from the Government Medical College, Nagpur. He said, “With an MBA degree, I can go into corporate healthcare or pharmaceutical industries and I won’t be giving up on my basic field either.”
A couple of years ago, B-schools hardly saw any CA students. Classrooms mostly comprised of engineers and some commerce and science students, but now, things are different. A CA degree is considered highly professional and offers students a package worth Rs5-6 lakh even at the beginning of their careers, something many MBA graduates do not get. The changing global scenario and rising opportunities have youngsters now aspiring for double degrees.
CA Aashish Parekh, who works in an investment company in Mumbai, said, “Nowadays, many 21 to 22-year-olds are clearing CA exams. It is better for them to add the degree to their portfolios as this may not be the right age for them to start their own practice.
Doctors, too, are ready to shelve their white coats for blue-collar jobs. Dr Harkirat Singh joined the 2012-14 class of IIM-Indore after completing his MBBS from Delhi University Medical College. He said, “I want to work in strategic planning for the healthcare sector. Although an MBBS degree is not required for that, it will give me an edge over others.”
The director of IIM-Udaipur, Janat Shah, a former faculty member of IIM-B, said, “In the nineties, IIM-B used to get four to five CAs , but this number gradually dropped to zero. But now, it’s good that MBBS and BDS students are pursuing an MBA. Our healthcare system needs better management.”
