Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, on Thursday evening, met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and demanded that he immediately cancel the Rs550 crore road construction contract that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was about to award to a particular set of contractors.

The MNS chief alleged that these contracts were nothing but a political gambit to fund the election campaign of BMC’s rulers (read Shiv Sena-BJP).

“The same contractors who have built the city’s roads are being awarded these new contracts. This is a serious racket as these same contractors will construct the roads and once the potholes appear, they will again be given contracts to fill those pits,” Thackeray said, adding that the same contractors were forming new companies and BMC’s ruling party was purposely giving the contracts to the same people.

“Once the contract is awarded, a certain percentage is given to these political parties. And, it is this money which will be used in the coming elections. Not only these parties, the entire administration is also involved in it. At a time when an honest person like Subodh Kumar is heading the BMC, Chavan should rise to the occasion and help him,” the MNS chief said.

DNA has an exclusive list of eight contractors who would be given the contracts. They are: Shantinath Roadways (Rs50.61 crore), RK Madhani (Rs71.20 crore), Prakash Engineering (Rs52:92 crore), Waleja Engineering (Rs63.37 crore), Relcon Infra Projects (Rs72.55 crore), Vitraj Construction (Rs53.06 crore), Mahavir Infra Projects (Rs74:79 crore) and KR Construction (Rs53.76 crore).

Interestingly, all these eight contractors were given contracts in 2008 and 2009, and all of them have been found guilty of constructing bad quality roads.

Thackeray has called for immediate action against allotting contracts to these contractors and the CM has assured him of the same.
