The Maharashtra government has submitted a proposal to the Centre to permanently cancel the licences of repeat offenders in rash and drunk driving cases.

This was revealed by state home minister RR Patil on Saturday while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Road Safety Campaign organised by the Pune police at the rural police headquarters, Pashan.

“In the last three years, the Maharashtra police have filed some 57,000 cases against rash and drunk drivers. However, it seems that people are not learning it the hard way. Even on December 31, some 8,000 vehicle owners were penalised for drunk driving,” Patil said.

Presenting the statistics he said while India has only 1% of the total vehicles in the world, 6% of the total accidents occur in our country.

Patil said people who voluntarily come forward and assist victims of road accidents in taking them to the hospital will be felicitated with a certificate by the governor.

He also assured that such people will not be harassed by the police or courts.
Minister of state for home, Satej Patil, said that a meeting would be held in the city to address the chaotic situation caused by rising vehicular population in the city.

State’s director general of police, D Sivanandan; Pune police commissioner Meeran Borwankar; superintendent of police (rural), Pratap Dighavkar and additional chief secretary Umesh C Sarangi distributed certificates to students, who participated in drawing and essay contests.

The police said the road safety campaign launched in association with other police departments, the RTO, the public works department and others saw a decrease in road accidents over the last 15 days.
