The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the Union government to file its reply on a PIL over rehabilitation of eligible slum dwellers around the Mumbai international airport. There are about 80,000 slums around the airport.
The petitioners, through RTI pleas, wanted to know who was responsible for implementation of the national rehabilitation policy and whether slums located on the airport land would be eligible for the benefits under this policy. But when the authorities refused to reply, petitioners Godfrey Pimenta and Nicholas Almeida filed a PIL in September 2009.
