The judicial magistrate (first class) Umeshchandra More on Saturday issued directives to the police officer investigating the case against killer Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) driver Santosh Mane asking him to be present before the court, along with Mane’s original medical documents.

More also asked him to submit the explanation on the show cause notice issued to him earlier for providing misleading information on Mane’s mental health. The magistrate has extended Mane’s magisterial custody till March 3. Mane’s lawyer Mahesh Agarwal has filed an application praying Dr Dilip Burte, who gave psychiatric treatment to Mane in Solapur, be summoned with the medical papers, and examine Mane to determine his mental condition.

The application mentions that on January 25, Mane was arrested and examined by a team of doctors from Sassoon General Hospital. On February 6, Mane was sent for observation at a mental hospital and the hospital doctors had issued a certificate about his mental state. Agarwal’s application challenged the certificate on the grounds that it was not issued as per the procedure mentioned in Section 24 of the Mental Health Act, 1987.

Claiming that Burte was treating Mane for the last 2 years and was well aware of Mane’s mental condition, the application said that Burte would be the best person to bring the true facts before the court and it was necessary to examine him. Earlier, Agarwal had filed an application to shift Mane to the mental hospital. The argument has been posted for hearing on February 23.
