The Pimple Nilakh-Baner Bridge over Mula river was opened for vehicular traffic after four years of completion, on Saturday.

Despite being completed four years ago, the bridge was closed to public for want of a connecting road at one end. Deputy chief minister of state, Ajit Pawar, inaugurated the bridge on Saturday.

The bridge links Pimple Nilakh, Kalewadi, Rahatni, Jagtap Dairy and Baner-Balewadi routes.

There are nearly 4,000 commuters from various parts of the city like Baner, Pashan, Pune and Aundh who come to the Pimpri-Chinchwad area for work every day. With the bridge opened to traffic, these people will save a lot of time in commuting.

Meanwhile, political parties vied to take credit for the project despite the four-year delay in its opening.

While Pawar inaugurated the overbridge on Saturday, the PMC held an inauguration ceremony on Monday.

The project was undertaken jointly by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). About Rs5.25 crore was spent to build the 160-metre-long, 20-metre-wide bridge.
