Civic officials in the solid waste management department (SWM) are in demand after successfully earning Rs25 crore worth of carbon credit. Several corporations in the state have been inviting them to give presentations on how to close dumping grounds in a scientific manner and how to earn money from trash.

Bhalchandra Patil, chief engineer, SWM department, said that they have been called by Nasik, Pune and Aurangabad corporations to give lectures on closing dumping grounds, tapping methane gas before it goes into the environment and on how to follow procedures.

“I am happy that our work has been endorsed at the international level and now other corporations want to follow us. We are the first civic body in India which followed a scientific method to cover up the 17-acre Gorai dumping ground. After closing the dumping ground, we started tapping the methane gas and earned carbon credits which we sold in the international market at a good price.

As a first installment we have already received Rs25 crore and we are expecting Rs50 crore in future. We want to repeat this success story in other corporations too,” he said.

Patil recently visited Nasik and Aurangabad corporations to deliver a lecture on ‘how to earn from trash’. “If the dumping ground is overflowing, then we start identifying suitable sites on the outskirts of city to dump our waste. We were busy in creating dumping grounds and not finding an ultimate solution — scientific closure of dumping grounds. The Nasik corporation had called all the adjoining municipal councils’ authorities to attend the presentation,” Patil added.

Another official said that they were happy that many corporations were calling up and making inquiring about Kyoto Protocol and carbon credit. “I hope other corporations will follow suit in making our state pollution-free. We got recognition at national and international level. Otherwise, the corporation was famous for negative stories such scam and corrupt officials,” he said.
