In spite of being Asia’s richest civic body, the employees of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s building proposal department at Byculla contributed money to refurbish their dilapidated building. Now, the entire office has got corporate and visitor- friendly look.

According to senior civic officials, they had conveyed several times to senior authority the need to undertake the urgent repair work in their office. “Our office was in dangerous condition. The ceiling, which had developed several cracks, was about to collapse. Fortunately no one was hurt. Office corners also looked dirty due to the gutkha and paan stains,” he said,

The officer, requested anonymity, said that they were giving permissions to other developers and residents to repair and construct new posh houses.

“But we ourselves were working in horrible condition. So we had called meeting of all the concerned engineers and decided to contribute some amount towards this repair work,” he said.

“Earlier, it was difficult to work during the summer as the windows were very narrow. The fans moved very slowly, providing no fresh air but consuming electricity. We converted these narrow windows into french windows, which solved the ventilation and light problem. We are saving electricity. We feel fresh while clearing the files,” said another engineer, again speaking on the condition of anonymity.

While carrying out the repair work, senior officials contributed between Rs20,000 to Rs30,000 and junior officials from Rs5,000 to Rs10,000. “It was voluntary contribution. We did not force or compel anyone for money. We did not ask the labour and clerical staff to contribute because of their low salary. Actually, we wanted to set up central air conditioning, but the plan could not work for some reason,’ said senior civic official.”

“After submitting the proposal for repairs, it took a lot of time to get the final approval and start the actual work. “It is sad that our department is not worried about its people. But it is better not to talk on this subject,” another official added.
