After adopting various measures to save water, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) now wants to improve the quality of water supplied to Mumbaikars. The BMC plans to map, inspect, repair and replace, wherever necessary, the sanitary sewers in the island city.

The Rs30-crore project, civic officials claimed, once completed will help the BMC improve the quality of water supplied. An ageing and a leakage prone sewage network are considered to be the major sources of water contamination in the island city.

The BMC has proposed to appoint agencies as consultants for video-surveying lines and ascertaining their health. Based on the observations, the agencies will suggest measures to upgrade the network and bring it up to modern standards.

Additional municipal commissioner RA Rajeev said that the appointed agencies — the BMC has proposed to appoint two agencies — will first desilt and clean the sewers. The agencies will be expected to video graph the sewage network to map the sewer lines and analyse their health. “Based on the findings, the agencies will identify stretches which need to be refurbished or rehabilitated,” Rajeev said.
