With the list of candidates being declared, the BJP like other all political parties is facing rebellion within the party.

Mumbai BJP chief Raj Purohit’s daughter-in-law Hema Purohit was denied a ticket. He has decided to field her from Mumbadevi (ward number 219) as a rebel.

BJP leader Parag Alvani’s wife Jyoti has filled the form as a candidate from Vile Parle (East) (ward number 80) against the official BJP candidate.

The rebels, many of whom have the backing from their party leaders, have embarrassed the top leadership. “In a cadre-based organisation, there is no room for any indiscipline. We have decided not to promote dynasty culture. There cannot be any justification to local leaders taking the party rules into their hands,” said Sudhir Mungantiwar, state BJP president.

The dissidents within the BJP have raised questions about the selection of candidates.

A general secretary in the party said: “If Vinod Shelar, brother of former corporator Ashish Shelar, can get a ticket why not relatives of Purohit and Alvani? You cannot have two sets of rules within the organisation.”

Some said Purohit had been sidelined as he belongs to senior leader Gopinath Munde’s camp. “The Mumbai BJP leaders who are close to party president Nitin Gadkari and leader of the Opposition in state council Vinod Tawde seem to have had an upper hand in distributing tickets,” they said.

Tawde dismissed the charge, saying it was a collective decision by the party’s Mumbai unit.

Sensing the intra-party differences, Mungantiwar plans to choose a handful of leaders for a damage-control exercise. “As it is, our stakes are limited to 20-25 seats in the BMC. If we cannot tackle the in-house crisis, the possibility of defeat cannot be ruled out,” said a source in the party.
