The Mumbai Marathon is over but the civic body is ‘chasing’ its organisers to get hold of their records of financial transactions.

The civic body is in a tussle with Procam International for evading dues of Rs1.8 crore. In the wake of this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had decided to demand audit records once the event was over.

But the civic body claims that despite repeated reminders, the organisers have not submitted audit details.

“We have been demanding financial details from Procam International, but they have not submitted them yet. We did not wish to disrupt the event, and so we asked for the audit reports once the event was over,” said Mohan Adtani, additional municipal commissioner.

The organisers of the Mumbai Marathon owe dues to BMC for the past three years. In 2008, the civic body had carried out cleaning of the roads, painting of the medians and resurfacing of the roads.

However, the organisers refused to pay the dues.

The BMC had earlier contemplated waiving off the dues, as the nature of the transaction was supposed to be charitable. The audit details were to be procured from the charity commissioner.

As the civic officials could not obtain the audit details and the organisers have not paid the dues, the BMC has now issued a one-month deadline to the organisers. “A deadline of 30 days has been given to them,” said Adtani.

“We will seize the security deposit that the organisers have submitted with the BMC. Even the money deposited by Procam last year wasn’t returned to them.”

The BMC had taken a deposit of Rs15 lakh from the organisers. Along with the deposit for advertisements, the costs for hoardings stand at Rs6 lakh. An additional cost was charged for laser beams and cleanliness.

The eighth edition of the Mumbai Marathon this year was held on January 16. In the last season, the marathon generated Rs9.3 crore of revenue, which was used for charity. This year, the revenue is expected to shoot up to Rs10 crore.
