The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finds itself in a bind due to the current Sanjay Nirupam versus Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena feud, though the party believes it might gain from the feud in the upcoming local elections.

BJP Mumbai president Raj Purohit condemned Nirupam’s remarks that without North Indians, Mumbai would shut down.

“What was the provocation for his remarks?” asked Purohit, at a press conference called to announced senior BJP leader LK Advani’s yatra’s imminent arrival in Mumbai on November 4.

Saying the BJP strongly condemned Nirupam’s remarks, he said that the Constitution of India gave its citizens the right to work and trade from any place in India. “But Nirupam’s statements have hurt the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra, because one must respect the language and the culture of the place we reside in,” he added.

The Shiv Sena, an ally of the BJP and the MNS had flayed Nirupam’s remarks and threatened to act if he tried to shut Mumbai down. For the BJP, which draws support from the many North Indians in Mumbai and in parts of Maharashtra, it finds itself in a bind between its ally Shiv Sena and its supporters.

One BJP leader said the entire feud would only benefit the Congress and the Shiv Sena, leaving out the others. “We, in the BJP, will have to come up with a plan because this Nirupam-Shiva Sena battle will only benefit them, leaving us out,” he said.

Incidentally, for years Nirupam was a member of the Shiv Sena, quitting a few years ago to join the Congress.

A Hindi-speaking political observer said, “Any fight at  only harms the interests of the Hindi-speaking poor people, and they might vote against the Congress in anger,” he said.
