A 23-year-old businessman crashed his Audi into two
autorickshaws early on Sunday morning in Vile Parle (east), and then slammed into four drivers.

The accused, identified as Vijal Yogendra Patel, was later released on a surety of Rs 5,000, said a police officer from the Vile Parle police station.

Patel, a resident of Nariman Road in Vile Parle, was on his way to the Western Express Highway from the railway station. “He lost control of the vehicle and rammed into two parked rickshaws. He then hit four rickshaw drivers, who were eating their dinner,” said assistant police inspector Rajendra Deshmukh of the Vile Parle police station.

The incident took place at around 2.30am on Nehru Road in Vile Parle. A mobile police vehicle on patrolling duty nabbed Patel immediately, and the injured were rushed to VN Desai hospital in Santacruz. They sustained minor injuries and were discharged after being treated.

Patel has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt) and 427 (causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police have seized the autorickshaws and Patel’s car. A Regional Transport Office (RTO) inspection is due to be conducted on the Audi on Monday to find out if there was any technical problem with the vehicle.
