Behrampada toll now 5, two more bodies found

Mumbai: Even 40 hours after the fire in Behrampada, Bandra, firefighters are still pulling bodies out of the guted slum. Two bodies were recovered on Friday and Saturday each, bringing the total number of dead to five.

Despite putting out the fire on Friday, firemen are still busy removing debris from the site and looking for bodies, if any.

On Saturday afternoon, they found a body in the nullah near the slum. In the evening, one more body was recovered from under the debris. Both bodies are charred beyond recognition.

A fire had broken out in the Bandra slum on Thursday morning, leaving one dead, 28 injured and about 70 shanties gutted. The fire started at Makarana gully and rapidly spread to other parts of the slum.

According to chief fire officer P Karguppikar, a ground-plus-three structure was badly damaged due to the fire and had to be demolished. There is apprehension that there might be some people trapped under the debris. About 20-25 more structures have been damaged by the huge blaze, and may collapse at an time.

Behrampada will get extra floor space index (FSI) for redevelopment, with victims getting compensation and rehabilitation in pucca houses. Chief minister Ashok Chavan visited the site and announced Rs one lakh as compensation for victims and their families.

Chavan also directed the officials to implement the slum redevelopment scheme for Behrampada and allow extra FSI for redevelopment of Behrampada. The chief minister also directed officials to remove the debris as soon as possible, and provide medical aid to the victims.
