The Pune police have been able to crack only 2,556 of the 10,699 cases of property offences recorded with them in 2011 — a dismal 24% detection rate. These offences include bicycle thefts, robbery, housebreaking, chain
snatching and  pickpocketing.

Senior police officials said that incidents of property offences had risen sharply over the last 10 years in Pune. While the cases recorded in 2000 were 3,520, the corresponding figure for 2010 was 6,367. The police said that the festive season of Diwali saw an increase in cases of property related crimes as citizens bring home their jewellery from their bank lockers.

Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Rajesh Bansode told DNA, “We are aware that there is an increase in these cases and the police are trying their best to zero down on suspects. We appeal to citizens to alert us about such incidents. Moreover, they should re-deposit their valuable ornaments in their banks at the earliest.”

According to the police officials, many thieves from neighbouring districts are robbing citizens and the cops are collecting information from various police departments to nab the suspects.
