The Versova police, investigating the alleged multi-crore cheating case of self-styled doctor Munir Khan, are facing hurdles in their investigations, as the office of the charity commissioner is not providing them information regarding the Munir Khan Cancer Trust.

“The hearing in Khan’s case has started in sessions court. Now, we need details of his trust to know whether it is registered. We also need to know who its chairperson is and how many members it has. But despite sending two reminders in November and December last year, the charity commissioner office is not ready to part with the details. Whenever we inquire with them regarding the details, they give us lame excuses,” said KMM Prasanna, deputy commissioner of police, zone X.

A police officer said on the condition of anonymity: “Recently, when a policeman from Versova police station visited the charity commissioner’s office at Worli to inquire about the delay, he was
not allowed to meet the charity commissioner.”

“However, the deputy charity commissioner concerned told him [the policeman] that his personal assistant is not in office and hence details could not be given,” the officer said.

When DNA contacted deputy charity commissioner G N Bansode, he refused to comment in this regard. But when this reporter spoke to Sharad Jadhav, a senior clerk, he said all information pertaining to the case will be provided to the police within two weeks.

“We received the letter on November 12, 2009, and the deputy charity commissioner gave the approval on November 26, 2009, to provide the information to the police,” Jadhav said.

However, KB Killedar, a superintendent at the charity
commissioner office, said there is a delay in giving the information to the police, as there is less manpower.

“The renovation work is going on in the office due to which the documents are shifting from one place to other. But soon, the details will be provided to the police if the records pertaining to the Khan’s trust are available with us,” said Killedar.
