Family of Naqi Ahmed, who was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) sleuths recently in a forgery case, have alleged that when they inquired about the case, the cops threatened them stating that if the family would indulge into inquiries then they would frame Ahmed in a fabricated case.

“We are allowed to meet Naqi by the ATS officers. When we started making inquiries with them about the case in which Naqi has been arrested by them, they threatened us that if we indulge into inquiries of the case, then they will frame Ahmed in a fabricated case. They have also detained Rafi and Razi Ahmed, brothers of Naqi,” said Mohammad Farooq, a relative of Ahmed.

The family has also raised doubts over ATS investigations. “If the ATS is claiming that Naqi was into any anti-national activity, then they should prove it. Through media we learnt that they have arrested him in a forgery case. All I want to know is, is forgery an anti-national activity?” he asked.

“If at all he is involved in a forgery case, then why are they not giving us any details about the case, such as when and where was the case registered? What was Naqi’s role in the case, if at all there was? More importantly, why did they pick up Naqi on January 9 and not before, if at all they were on his trail?"

"The entire modus-operandi of ATS to book people in forgery case is dubious as they had used the same trick with three students from Mohali. They had brought them from Mohali suspecting they were into anti-national activities and booked them in a forgery case. Even in that case, the ATS didn’t share any information about the case in which they were arrested,” said Farooq.

As per Naqi’s family, no criminal case is registered against him. “He has no criminal background. He was brought up in Darbhanga and studied in a madarsa there. He was studying commerce at the Maulana Azad University in Delhi. All we know is that Naqi got in touch with Yasin Bhatkal alias Imran through Gayoor Ahmed Jamali,” said another relative, who did not wish to be identified.

Naqi was produced before the Mazgaon Court on Thursday and has been remanded to police custody till January 23.
