Reason to cheer: The Mumbai board of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will be conducting a lottery for close to 10,000 tenements soon. What more, the winners will be allowed to pay in instalments — a precedent followed by private developers.

Amarjit Singh Manhas, chairman of the Mumbai board, said the authority will be selling close to 10,000 houses through lottery in the next two years. “This time, we will sell even those houses which are under construction, the way private developers do. This will ease the financial burden on the winners as they will be able to pay in instalments,” said Manhas.

MHADA is expected to sell close to 4,500 houses in the next lottery, scheduled in May 2011. However, of these tenements, at present Mhada is in possession of only 600 tenements. Although, the board has asked the administration to speed up the construction, the authority is under pressure due to additional responsibility of constructing 6,500 tenements for mill workers. This has made it impossible to conduct both the lotteries at the same time.

“However, we are getting some portion from the mill workers houses for our lotteries. The plan is to construct and handover 10,000 houses by 2013,” added Manhas.

The authority is also constructing 6,303 houses at various locations, which are meant for repairs and reconstruction board. Of these, 4,474 houses are to be used as transit camps. “The rest will be added to the lottery. Mhada is also constructing 3,532 houses under the turn key project at 13 different locations. All these will be added to the lottery plan,” said Manhas. He further added that of these 13 locations, barring Charkop, RCC 22 area and DG Nagar in Malvani (Malad), the rest of the building designs are yet to be approved by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). “However, we expect an approval by month-end,” he added.
