At the Rachana Sansad Academy of Fine Arts & Crafts in Prabhadevi, there is a buzz in the air coupled with nervous excitement. Final touches are being added, frames are being put up, invites being sent out. For the students who’ll be exhibiting their work at the Piramal Gallery at NCPA, Marine Drive from December 13 to December 22, the coming month will be a culmination of four years of holistic training in the fine arts.

Eighteen students of the fourth year have been selected to display their art work which ranges from paintings and sculptures to videos, performances, photography and installations. Student Vandana Podar will give form to the idea of silence and how we deal with it in the city through a book that has an iron cover and weighs six kilos but has tissue thin pages inside.

“Living in the city, we are starved of silence. But left to ourselves, the silence grows even louder as we are overwhelmed and confronted by our thoughts.  So the cover represents silence as a heavy feeling, while the thin paper demonstrates how silence is brittle and can be broken at any time,” she explains.

After rummaging through city lanes, Teju Zaveri has transformed things that she loves about Mumbai into a colourful work of art featuring minute details of the city like Maharashtrian lamps hung outside stalls in Parel, the Gothic buildings of Colaba etc. Another fourth-year student, Sahej Rahal will pose as a ‘Wicked Messenger’ with a broken tanpura placed over his head.

This novel idea is the brainchild of artist and art educationist Shilpa Joglekar. She is the curator of the show and has been a guide to the students over the past four years.

Astha Malu, a sculpture student, believes that this is a unique opportunity provided by the college as it strengthens the sense of camaraderie amongst students. Sahej Rahal and Niyati Upadhaya, who are exploring the fields of performance and photography, feel that studying at Rachana Sansad as opposed to other colleges gave them an opportunity to explore mediums and encouraged them to take risks and experiment.

One of the leading art colleges of the city, Rachna Sansad was established in 2005 with the view that an education in fine arts holds the key to realizing one’s creative potential and achieving success in the field of visual arts.
