The Opposition, on Thursday, took the state government to task for failing to handle the train disruptions on the central line, which were hit for the second consecutive day. The treasury benches denied the charge.

Leader of the Opposition in the council Vinod Tawde raised the issue saying the signal failure that disrupted services was an urgent matter and demanded that the government apologise to Mumbaikars for the “negligence” towards them. He criticised the government for failing to call an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation and find the best solutions.

In the evening, Mumbai suburban minister Naseem Khan informed the council of Thursday’s accident near Nahur. He announced a compensation of Rs2 lakh for the families of the deceased.

In the morning, the Opposition flayed CM Prithviraj Chavan, who also holds the transport portfolio, Mumbai guardian minister Jayant Patil, and Khan. Denying laxity on the government’s part, Chavan said: “The government has been in touch with the railway officials since Wednesday and held a joint meeting this morning.”
