Even as friends and families of Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez grieve their loss, politicians are leaving no stone unturned to augment his vote bank ahead of the 2012 civic elections.

During Reuben's funeral service at St Blaise Church in Amboli on Tuesday, local Congress MLA Ashok Jadhav was allegedly seen distributing copies of a city daily, which carried a story claiming Jadhav helped the families after the incident.

Avinash Solanki, 30, who was among the seven friends who confronted the goons on that night of the incident, said Jadhav was trying to politicise the incident for personal gains.

"The story that he was so enthusiastically handing over to more than 500 people carried false information," said Solanki. "He claims that he footed the bill at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for Reuben's expenditures. He is also quoted as saying that he personally took care of Reuben for 12 days. The truth is that he never visited him before the funeral, forget paying the bills."

Reports that three days later, Jadhav visited the families of the four men arrested for the murders and assured them support has enraged the friends and families of the victims.

They also allege that the hospital was also not far behind. Keenan's friend Valentine Silveira, 26, alleged that medical negligence contributed to Reuben's death.

According to him, on Saturday at 1.30am, two policemen barged into the ICU without permission and questioned Reuben.

Reuben, who was not informed about Keenan's death on the doctors' advice, started bleeding internally after he heard them discussing his friend's death, Silveira alleged.

The next day, being a Sunday, the hospital was practically closed despite of having a patient in the emergency ward. Valentine said: "We had to ask MP Priya Dutt to intervene and ask the surgeons to take care of his bleeding. But the surgeons were unavailable for a long time during which he lost a lot of blood."

The hospital denied that there was any negligence.

“This is totally untrue," said Jayanta Narayan Saha, spokesperson, Kokilaben Ambani Hospital. "If they thought we were negligent, why haven't they complaint to the hospital authorities or to the police? In fact, the family has thanked us for our efforts to save Reuben."
