It’s Christmas time and people are on a shopping spree.  It is not the neighbourhood shops that boast of dishing out all Christmas products, but Bandra’s Hill Road is the preferred shopping destination for Mumbaikars.

“Bandra has an East-Indian crowd and so it has a more festive feel. The products here have more variety and make for better decorative furniture. Back home there are shops but they do not have the kind of products sell here. I prefer to come here and shop. I am going to buy a Christmas tree,” said Felcy Mascarenhas, an LIC agent who works and lives in Vasai.

While Masceranhas had travelled all the way, others like Laura D’Souza from Wadala, also prefers the popular suburb, which often gets very crowded during the festive season.

“I prefer shopping either here or at Crawford market. Both the places have better products.  I do not have to buy too many products as over the years I have made a good collection at home. Today’s shopping will not exceed Rs500,” said D’souza, an IT professional.

Resident of Goregaon, Nivedita Bhargava feels she gets a good deal in Bandra. Bhargava said, “I have to buy something for my in-laws each year. I come here because they keep a good collection of different decorations. Some of them are reasonably priced.”

Christmas trees are in great demand every season. This year, the white tree seems to be the favourite according to shopkeepers.
“The white trees are sold out this year,” said Abbas Mukadam, who runs Raja Enterprises, a shop on Hill Road.
