In the morning, arrivals were delayed by at least 15 minutes and departures by 30 minutes as the visibility was 1100 meters till 1.30pm. However, later, the arrivals and departures were delayed by over 45 minutes to 1.5 hours as the visibility further dropped to 600 metres. “One non-scheduled flight from Hyderabad to Mumbai had to do a go-around,” said the spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).
A Kingfisher Airlines flight IT 3175 Goa-Mumbai that was to arrive at 6.10pm was scheduled to arrive at 7.30pm. A Spicejet flight SG 264 Coimbatore-Mumbai that was to land in Mumbai at 455pm was later scheduled to 5.45pm.
The suburban railways, too, slowed down as incessant rains led to water-logging on tracks in many sections along the line. The derailment of a Mumbai-bound train near Kasara compounded problems. Most indicators at stations did not display train timings, leaving commuters in a lurch. Commuters complained that the journey between Thane and CST that usually takes 50 minutes took two hours with trains lined up at Kurla, Dadar and Masjid Bunder in water. A number of stations on CR had leaking roofs.
According to sources, Western Railway services were running behind schedule by 15-20 minutes. Trains were late between Bandra and Borivli. “Due to traffic jams, we had to keep the level crossings open for a longer time, leading to the delay,” WR’s chief spokesperson Sharat Chandrayan said.
Sources said one of the prime reasons for water-logging on CR despite installation of pumps were the low-lying areas and debris of discarded rails and overhead wire masts lying along the section.
