Act to control water mafia in Mumbai

Despite an investment of over Rs7000 crore for 359 water supply projects for 247 urban local bodies, no city water utility provides uninterrupted water supply in the state.

The 11th International Conference on improving water supply was held in Thane on Friday. The two-day event was organised by Indian Water Works Association, Mumbai Centre, in association with Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, Government of Maharashtra, All India Institute of Local Self Government and the World Bank.

The minister for Water Supply and Sanitation for Maharashtra Laxmanrao Dhobale was the chief guest.He said that the state was planning to form a new Act to control the water mafia. “Less rainfall has caused major water shortage in the state making water management necessary. We are trying to contact experts to help us.”

Dr SV Dahasahasra, member secretary, Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran said, “It is not an immediate process. It will take place in phases and will involve high technology.”
Bulk water system, telescopic rates, and prepaid water system can help in ensuring uninterrupted water supply in the city and urban areas of the state.

World Bank consultant Smita Mishra spoke on how leakages and water theft could be reduced in slums by making them pay according to their income.

“By appointing one resident as a service provider, we can ensure water supply in an organised manner,” she said.
