Here comes a “40-year-plan” to transform Mumbai into a world-class city. The Mumbai Transformation Support Unit (MTSU) has decided to make a concept plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which will pinpoint the essentials for the holistic development of the region. The deadline for its implementation is 2052.
Explaining the concept plan, UPS Madan, project manager, MTSU, said on Wednesday that it would include all key aspects, such as transport and housing, and other infrastructure related issues. “The plan will involve comprehensive planning, physical visualisation, sequencing of investment needs, various redevelopment models and issues pertaining to climate change,” he told the audience at the Megamorphosis.
Madan added that the concept plan would be implemented in two phases. The first phase will extend up to 2032 and the second, up to 2052. “The objective behind the concept plan is to achieve tough yet achievable goals, such as a slum-free and economically vibrant region and housing for all,” he said.
When the MTSU issued the expression of interests, as many as 40 global companies queued up. From them, the Singapore-based Surbana International has emerged the strongest consultant in the race to win the contract. Madan said that the tender, following scrutiny, would be awarded by December 2009. And the concept plan should be ready by the end of 2010.
