At least 40,000 people — including top BJP leaders, chief minister Ashok Chavan, and other dignitaries — are scheduled to reach Pune on Friday to attend ‘the great, grand and royal’ wedding of Dr Pritam Munde, daughter of BJP national general secretary Gopinath Munde.

Pritam, a dermatologist, will marry Gaurav Khade, an IT engineer doing his PhD in the US. Gaurav is the son of Dr Rajendra Khade, a well-known radiologist in Nashik.

Apart from top BJP leaders, including leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha LK Advani, party president Rajnath Singh and leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, at least half of the state cabinet is expected to attend the wedding at the Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School (SSPMS) grounds in Shivajinagar.

Munde has been camping in the city over the past few days to review the preparations.

He has personally invited at least 1,500 top guests. The muhurat is at 6.21pm.

Wizcraft International Entertainment Private Limited, which had organised the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, the Michael Jackson show in Mumbai, and Amitabh Bachchan’s Unforgettable Tour all over the world, is the event manager.

Wizcraft’s in-charge for the ceremony Farid Khan said efforts have been made to recreate the ambience of weddings during the times of Shivaji and the Peshwas. “It will be a great, grand and royal Maratha wedding.” A central dome will provide the appropriate backdrop for the ceremony, he said.

A pandal that can accommodate 40,000 people is being set up. The main stage will measure 80x60 feet and two golden elephants (each measuring 6ft) will be there on the dais. A display of fireworks too has been planned, Khan said.
