The state’s economic survey for 2009-10, which was published on Tuesday, has revealed that 36% of schools in Maharashtra do not have toilets for girl students. What’s further startling is that 12% of schools do not even have the facility of drinking water. According to the survey, 77.1% schools in the state have common toilets for boys and girls, and only 37.2% state schools have computers.

The economic survey not only threw light on the pathetic condition of girls’ education in the state but also stated that the gender gap in the education system was also widening. As far as girls’ education is concerned the gender parity index for primary and upper primary education is 0.89, for secondary education it’s 0.85 and for higher secondary it’s 0.77.

The survey stated that the wider gender gap exists due to various reasons such as poverty, domestic or sibling responsibilities, girl child labour and preference to marriage over education. And, the disparity is more acute in the enrollment of SC and ST girls especially at upper primary level.

According to the survey, the state ranks 15th in the country for development of education at primary and upper primary level.
On the other hand, the economic survey revealed that the state had also made progress in certain areas. The state has 1,998 primary, 925 secondary and 285 higher secondary educational institutions exclusively for girls, a number that has grown. The percentage of children studying in Class 1 who can’t read anything has
reduced from 14.5% in 2008 to 11.2% in 2009.

Also, the drop out rate from the state’s schools at the primary level has reduced from 12.3% in 2005-06 to 10.2% in 2007-08, and at the upper-primary level it has come down from 20.8% in 2005-06 to 18.6% in 2007-08.
