3 cases in 48 hrs; booty valued at Rs2.52 lakh stolen

Chain-snatchers are back in business after the civic elections in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The police recorded three incidents on Saturday, in Swargate, Khadki and Kothrud areas. The suspects fled with booty valued at Rs2.52 lakh.

The city police recorded fewer number of chain snatchings in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas during the civic elections. The heightened security saw the presence of most policemen, including senior officers, on the roads. 

The Swargate police arrested two suspects, identified as Nitin Anil Ahankari (19) of Dias Plot and Rajesh Dnyaneshwar Mane (22) of Laxminagar on a complaint by Manili Rajan Kamble (42), a homemaker. She lodged a complaint with the Swargate police that the suspects approached her from behind and snatched her gold chain valued at Rs27,000 on Saturday. Kamble is a resident of Vinayak Society in Sahakarnagar. On Saturday night, she was on her way home. Near Sarasbaug, two suspects came from behind and snatched her chain. Inspector Suryakant Kamble told DNA, “Ahankari has a criminal record since 2006 and has six such cases registered against him. Most of them are petty offences like stealing articles from bus depots and selling them to scrap dealers. The police have started a process of externment against him.”

In another incident, Pakkibai Chandulal Chaudhari (57) lodged a complaint at Khadki police station that two suspects on a motorcycle snatched her gold chain valued at Rs1.3 lakh at Landmark Society in Aundh on Saturday evening. In the third incident, two men on a motorcycle snatched a gold chain valued at Rs95,000 on Saturday night on Ideal Colony Road in Kothrud. A complaint in this regard was lodged by the victim, Shailaja Madhav Agashe (72) with the Kothrud police. The police are investigating the case.
