Those visiting popular hill stations and pilgrim places can experience a cool summer this year as the state electricity distribution company has promised no power cuts from May 2.

As a Maharashtra Day gift, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd has decided to make hill stations Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Lonavala and Matheran; pilgrim spots Shirdi, Trimbakeshwar, Pandharpur, Jejuri, Parli-Vaijnath, Tuljapur, Shegaon and Alibaug beach free of load-shedding.

“Zero load-shedding will be applicable in the municipal limits of these 12 places,” said a spokesperson for state electricity distribution firm. But there is a condition: These places will have to keep electricity distribution losses below 15%.

“We are sure the locals will comply with the condition as it is in their business interest,” the spokesperson said.

This initiative will boost the tourism industry by attracting more tourists to these places, thus help create more job opportunities.
“It will also project a better image of the state to international tourists” said Ahmed Khan, who owns a cottage at Matheran — Asia’s tiniest hill station.

Maharashtra is one of the most visited destinations in India by foreign tourists and ranks among the top five states to be frequented by domestic travellers.

Officials from the Maharashtra State Tourism Corporation have admitted that power cut has been one of the major hurdles in luring tourists to the state. But with power deficit averaging around 1,500 MW, the state government expects to be self-sufficient and make Maharashtra load-shedding-free by December.
