With no hospital in their locality, the Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) has signed up for 24X7 ambulance services to tackle any medical emergencies. Cuffe Parade is one of the most up market addresses in south Mumbai.

The residents felt the need to have the facility as they believe there is no hospital nearby and poor response from ambulance facilities can cost them dearly. Due to this, an ambulance will now be stationed in the area for 24X7 through the year to cater to the residents’ emergencies.

“We did this as a promise to our residents during our election manifesto. When we would come there, we would give emergency medical services to our member societies as there is no hospital nearby and ambulance response in the city is poor. In serious cases, by the time a patient gets help, crucial time is lost. This is done with the idea that before one reaches hospital, help is given,” said Ramasubban Balakrishnan, executive committee member of the CPRA who is overseeing the project.

As per the arrangement that is called as the “premises plan”, anyone and everyone within the boundary of the member society will be given emergency help.

“This will include residents, members, staff of the society, guest, servants, vendor and anyone inside the society premises,” added Balakrishnan. The agency they have tied up with is Topsline that has stationed an ambulance within the locality. The facilities include all kinds of emergency related ailments particularly, physical assault, fire, accidents, gas leakage, short circuit, burglary and intrusion related problem.

“The patient will be taken to hospitals that are within nine kilometers of the radius,” added Balakrishnan. “Their response time will be a maximum of nine minutes from the time a call is made to their control. They will have to reach the patient, give him para-medical help and take him to the hospital,” said Ashok Kanwar, CPRA president.

The association has identified eight hospitals that include Jaslok Hospital, Parsi General Hospital, Bhatia Hospital, Breach Candy, Bombay Hospital, St Geroge's, Cumballa Hill and Saifee Hospital.
For quicker response, two marshals on motorcycles will also be patrolling the 52 societies. Some societies have more than one building and each building has flats from four to 163. These are spread across Wodehouse Road, Capt Prakash Pethe Marg, Jhulelal Bunder Road and Cuffe Parade Road. “Each flat has to pay Rs 450 for this per year,” added Balakrishnan. In some time, he said, the buildings will soon be codified for better response system.

Jobin Abraham, one of the paramedic in the ambulance said, “The ambulance can cater to heart emergency, breathing problems, provide ventilator, nebulizer, ECG among others life saving equipments.”
