A 20-year-old youth was arrested by the Saki Naka police for allegedly cheating 50 people of over Rs5 lakh on the pretext of offering them personal loan. He used a minister’s photograph to lure the victims.

The accused, Arif Khan, allegedly took processing fees of Rs5,000 to Rs25,000 from the victims, creating a fake profile on the internet and uploading photographs of guardian minister Arif Naseem Khan. The profile stated that Khan was the financier of the loan.

Khan and his accomplice Mohammad Ansari, 23, used to work as spot boys in the Hindi film industry. While Khan is a resident of Saki Naka, Ansari is from Goregaon (East).

The police said the duo had pasted pamphlets in local trains which said those who wanted personal loans within 24 hours can call on the mobile numbers mentioned on it.

“However, after they get the processing fees from the customers, they would stop answering their calls,” said a police officer.

“They had created a fake profile on the internet and uploaded photographs of minister Naseem Khan and claimed that Khan was the financier.

The arrested accused whose name is similar with the minister’s, used the minister’s photograph to gain the customers’ trust,” said senior inspector Samadhan Dhanedhar of Saki Naka police station.

“Around 50 people have lodged complaints; most of them work in the film industry as side artistes. Till now, the estimated embezzled amount is Rs5 lakh,” said Dhanedhar.

“The incident came to light after a Khar resident, Leena Londe, approached the police and narrated how she was duped by the duo to the tune of Rs20,000. Londe said the duo took the money on the pretext of processing fees,” said another police officer.
