In a shocking revelation, two of the five members of a gang arrested by the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) of the Mumbai Police were found to be policemen attached with the Thane ANC.
Those arrested have been identified constables Ashok Suryavanshi and Chimaji Kshirsagar, police informer Shakeel Shaikh, teacher Ashok Dongre, and one Rupesh Kaginkar.
The police said Shaikh was arrested by the Worli unit of ANC on February 19 from Dadar (W) while he was trying to sell 1.5kg of charas to someone. During interrogation, Shaikh revealed that the contraband was provided to him by Dongre. Dongre was then arrested on February 25 from Nehru Nagar in Kurla.
During interrogation it was revealed that Shaikh, an informer of Thane ANC, had tipped off Suryavanshi and Kshirsagar that on February 11, Dongre would be arriving near Manpada area of Thane to sell charas. They then arranged a vehicle through Kaginkar and all five laid a trap and intercepted Dongre and a lady in an auto-rickshaw and seized 4kg of charas from them.
“The woman then requested them to leave Dongre and offered them give the charas as well as Rs50,000, which she claimed to have kept for her daughter’s wedding. Kaginkar then went with the women to her house and got the money after which Dongre was released. The group then came to Kalyan Phata and later Thane,” said an ANC officer.
He added Shaikh then offered to sell off the charas and give money to the gang members. On February 12, Shaikh sold some part of the charas and gave Rs2lakh to the two constables. On February 29, both constables were arrested, while Kaginkar was held on Thursday. As of now, the police have seized 1.5kg of charas, two mobile phones and a Qualis jeep from the gang.
