At least ten people sustained injuries after an elevator fell down from the fifth floor of a 17-storey building in Goregaon (West) on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police, the incident took place in Chamunda Towers near Apna Bazar around 1pm. “Seven people were discharged after first aid and the rest will be discharged on Monday. It appears that the lift crashed down because of overloading. But we are trying to find out the exact cause. A technical person will do an inspection of the lift and give us a report,” said assistant police inspector Bagal of Goregaon police station. “We have registered a case of negligence against the builder and the contractor.”

Shashikant Jain, who has bought a new flat on the fifth floor had organised a housewarming party.  The injured had gone to his residence to attend the function. They had all cramped into the lift together.
